Introduction:

Your job as a group of travel agency experts is to plan a two week holiday for three students from Poland, who have won three first prizes in FOX competition.

They are going to stay with English families and they will get £400 each as their pocket money.

Task:

After researching the assigned region (Sussex in this particular case) your group will prepare a holiday offer. You will search the net and incorporate individual interests and desires into the vacation plans so that each member is satisfied. Remember that one student is interested in biology, the other one in history and the third one in sport.

Decide and plan their dream holidays considering the following:

1.   How to get to Brighton and how much it will cost. Of course you are interested in the cheapest means of transport.

2.   Study the weather condition in this area and decide what clothes students need to take.

3.   The students are going to stay with English families so prepare a short list of traditional meals they might expect to be served.

4.     The students want to see places of historic importance in Brighton and the area of Sussex so decide what places they may visit, how they may get there and how much the admission is.

5.     They want to relax close to nature and have fun, too. Prepare a list of activities and places they may go to.

6.   The students might also want to buy some souvenirs so give them advise on where to do shopping.

Process:

1.     You will be assigned to teams of three. You will collect and record data from the internet.

2.     Each person has to be responsible for completing two tasks. It is up to you to decide which ones.

3.     Remember that all of you work for the same travel agency so you need    to support one another and cooperate.

4.     Meet as a group. Create a group list of activities for students to do and calculate the costs (they have £400 to spend). Compromise will be necessary. Plan the schedule.

5.     Create your group presentation. For your presentation you may want to use maps, charts or computer slide show. Your group will make a presentation to the class and the teacher.

6.     Each individual has to be familiar with other members’ work, approve of it and since it is a project in a foreign language she or he should understand the basic vocabulary.

Resources:

GOOGLE will give you the links after inserting BRIGHTON as a word to search.

You may also search www.sussextourism.org.uk for Sussex tourist atractions and http://europa.eu.int/abc/travel/index_en.htm for advise on shopping, cultural activities, travel arrangements...

Evaluation:

You will get a group grade for this project. You will need to complete all group tasks to have a completed project.

CRITERIA – this is how the teacher is going to evaluate your work:

Teacher’s note:

English classes are designed to prepare today's students for the tomorrow in which they will need to function in varied contexts. This is accomplished through the incorporation of the five national standards: communication, culture, comparisons, connections, and communities ("Foreign Language Standards," 1998). Each of these is essential to the study of a language, and they must all be addressed.

Technology is an essential component that is needed to prepare today's student for tomorrow. "Technology encompasses the tools and strategies for solving problems, using information, increasing productivity, and enhancing personal growth" ("Foreign Language Standards," 1998). The technology standards are designed to give students the skills they need to function at a personal and professional level in society ("Technology Standards").

Just as no two learners acquire knowledge in the exact same way, all of the standards should not be approached in the same way. Technology is one strategy that can be incorporated with the teaching of the foreign language standards. This strategy (technology) is further supported in the foreign language standards. "Students will need to use technologies that will bring the language and the culture to them in new ways and enhance their opportunities to learn" ("Foreign Language Standards"). Through combining technology and the study of the English  language into a webquest, students will  find out that Great Britain can be a perfect holiday destination, shatter the stereotypes of the  boring British and gain skills in technology and English that will help them today and prepare them for tomorrow.

Final thought:

This webquest will be used with ¯eromski Secondary School second form students as the end of their first term unit. It will take approximately four weeks: one week research, two weeks paper and power point work and one week presentation. This will be our first webquest so there might be things or problems which are difficult to predict. All of us will learn. The students and the teacher.
